Silicon Carbide - 400 grit - 500g tub

For manual grinding, mix the silicon carbide into a slurry with water on a piece of clear float glass and move the glass you wish to smooth off in a figure-8 motion through the slurry whilst applying slight downward pressure.

This product is good for sandblasting glass as well as traditional manual grinding operations. Harder than aluminum oxide, it cuts glass faster and lasts longer because on impact it breaks off small pieces, exposing new sharp cutting edges One of its advantages is that it produces no static electricity, reducing dust accumulation on the back of the glass.

It does not produce free silica and its dust is rated as a "nuisance dust", and not as a hazardous material.

Creates "flashlight effect" of small sparks where particles hit glass, making it easy to see the area being blasted

Its down side is that it is more expensive than aluminum oxide, is generally more difficult to source and its dust is black, making it very visible in your workshop. Glass is rated between 4.5 and 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, silicon carbide is a 9.5 (on a scale of 10, with 10 being diamond). It is reusable until the grit becomes so fine that it gets sucked out of the cabinet as dust.
